The town of Maymont is an uncommon feature of the city of Richmond, Virginia. The small community is located at 1700 Hampton St, Richmond, VA 23220 and is best known for its beautiful landscaping, historic architecture and recreational opportunities. With a population of just 400 people, it’s also one of the smaller incorporated communities in Virginia. Maymont was established as a private estate by industrialist William Lewis Cabell in 1839 on over 70 acres (280,000 m²) of land. It was inherited by his son Dr. Thomas Alfred Cabell and remained in the family until it was sold to Richmond County Circuit Court Judge John Craig in 1883. Maymill Place became a public park under the management of Richmond County Department of Parks & Recreation when it was donated to the county by Judge Craig’s descendants in 1919.

Maymont: An Architectural Gem

The first thing that you will notice when visiting the town of Maymont is the beautiful landscaping. The gardens that make up this architectural gem were beautifully planted as early as the 1860s by the estate’s owners. The grounds are filled with different flowering plants and trees including Japanese Maple, Flowering Dogwood, and American Elm. Add to that several types of palms, magnolias, roses and many more and you have a wonderful setting to relax and take in all the sights and sounds of the surrounding city. The buildings found in Maymont are all the work of local architect Edward Clifford Clark. There is an exceptional example of his work in the main entrance of the Cabell-Craig House, which was built in 1894. This home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The park also features a children’s playground area, a two-court tennis center, and public restrooms. The Maymont Park Golf Course is another popular spot on the West End. The 18-hole course is located in an open park setting and has a view of the James River. The course has a nine-hole practice green, a driving range and a pro shop.
